From Accounting Zero to Accounting Hero

Your Hero’s Journey to Accounting Mastery

Many Aussie sole traders avoid learning the accounting stuff because it's overwhelming.

At That Accounting Stuff, we've 'chunked it down' into manageable pieces, so you can baby-step your way through the journey, gaining more and more confidence with each milestone.

We've broken the learning journey into:

We've also turned it from a deathly boring 'information dump' into a grand adventure - a Hero's Journey, if you will. Like a great adventure movie, with you as the main character.

Yes, there'll be challenges, but Heroes on the Journey often discover they are stronger and smarter than they think, and they end up finding the treasure they seek - usually by doing the one thing they don't want to do. Like the old sage once said, 'The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek'.

And because your teacher is not your typical boring accountant, but rather The Accountress of Hogwarts, Accounting Pre-School, Primary School, High School and University all take place at the 'Hogwarts Accounting Academy' - where our Hero, young Harry/Harriet Potter, discover something they never imagined in their life under the stairs - that they are in fact, accounting wizards...

The Accounting Hero's Journey

First, we need a Hero. That would be you.

I know, I know. You probably feel more like Accounting Zero than Hero right now:

  • Dazed and confused
  • Don’t know where to begin
  • No/crappy system
  • Lacking confidence

But, young Harry/Harriet Potter, you’re actually an accounting wizard! You just don’t know it yet.

You need to go on the Hero’s Journey, to find your magical accounting powers.

Every Hero needs a Wizard - a mentor - to help them on the Journey.

The Wizard is someone who’s been where you are, but has done their own Hero’s Journey to get to where you want to be.

They understand what it’s like to be where you are now. And they know what awaits you on the Hero’s Journey, so they can guide you through it.

  • Not your typical ‘numbers nerd’ accountant
  • Got 9 years behind on her tax returns
  • Figured out a system to make it quick and easy
  • Accountant with personality, and a knack for explaining accounting to non-accountants

Accounting Pre-School

First principles. Learn with play.

In accounting pre-school, we'll cover the basics, so you can have a good strong foundation on which to build your accounting house. And we'll do it with memes, fridge magnets, singing, and colouring! It's so much fun, you'll think you're back in kindergarten, not in an accounting course!

Get Ready For That Accounting Stuff

If you don’t know a Balance Sheet from a Profit and Loss from a Chart of Accounts, or even what accounting is exactly, and you have a bunch of head trash around money and accounting, this mini-course is for you.

Accounting Primary School

Set up your system. Do your bookkeeping - regularly.

In accounting primary school, we'll build your accounting house on the foundation laid down in pre-school. You'll set up your accounting system, and learn basic bookkeeping.

Much like in regular primary school, it's all about learning - and practising the core skills - the 'reading, writing', 'rithmetic' of accounting - which are to record, classify, summarise and analyse your business transactions - that lead you to the core financial report for sole traders - the Profit and Loss Report.

And there's no theory exercises in accounting primary school - your in-class and homework is to DO your own accounting! A course doesn't get any more practical than that!

That Accounting Stuff - Spreadsheet Edition

If you have a simple sole trader business, only need to record income and expenses, and accounting software is too expensive/complicated for you, check out our spreadsheet accounting course.

That Accounting Stuff - Software Edition

If you need more than a spreadsheet for your business accounting but don’t even know where to begin when it comes to choosing, setting up, or using accounting software, check out our software accounting course.

Do Your Accounting! Online Meetups

If you leave your accounting until tax time and need some support to develop the habit of doing your accounting monthly, or you have ADHD and need some body doubling, these online meet-ups are for you.

Accounting High School

Manage your money. Organise your paperwork. Report to Centrelink.

In Accounting High School, you're becoming a 'young adult' business owner. You've got the basics down, now it's time to start fleshing out your teenage wizard's suite of Mad Accounting Skillz and really taking charge of your business' finances.

You'll learn how to track your cashflow, create a budget and see how you're tracking against it, organise your paperwork, set your prices to make your business sustainable and enable the lifestyle you want, and, if you need to, report to Centrelink as a self-employed person.

That Cashflow Stuff

Cashflow issues are the second biggest cause of small business failure. If you don't want your business to fail because of them, this micro-course is for you.

That Receipts Stuff

If your receipts and other business paperwork are stuffed in the glovebox, down the back of the car seat, or in random piles around your house, this micro course is for you.

That Centrelink Self Employment Stuff

It's not easy being on Centrelink - especially as a self-employed person. This micro course will explain the basics, and help you complete the Centrelink Profit and Loss Statement form SU580.

That Budgeting Stuff

If you want to keep those little spending goblins under control so they don't keep emptying your bank account and killing your profitability, this micro-course is for you.

That Pricing Stuff

If you have no idea what to charge for your products or services, or you haven't raised your prices since 2020 because you're too scared of losing customers, this micro-course is for you.

Accounting University

Keep the tax man happy.

Tax returns are where most sole traders try to start their accounting journey - but that's like a pre-schooler trying to go to university!

It's far better to leave this stuff until last - when you have the knowledge and confidence to do your accounting, the tax return almost takes care of itself.

But tax is a whole other world to accounting, and you definitely need a guide through this one - which is what Accounting University is for.

That GST Stuff

About to hit $75,000 annual revenue? Congratulations! This mini-course will get you ready for your new - unpaid, of course - job as a tax collector for the grubby-ment.

That Tax Stuff

If you don’t know a deduction from a rebate, have no idea how to navigate an income tax return, or what sorts of business expenses are claimable, this income tax mini-course is for you.

That Tax Stuff

If you don’t know a deduction from an offset, have no idea how to navigate an income tax return, or what sorts of business expenses are claimable, this income tax mini-course is for you.

Tax Parties

Make getting your tax return prepared a whole lot more fun with one of our tax parties! Celebrate your year of accounting, make new friends, and get your tax return lodged by a registered tax agent right there at the party! It's the most fun you'll ever have doing something with the word 'tax' in it.

After the Hero's Journey

The Hero returns from the Journey transformed and ready to live their new life with the strengths and skills they acquired on the journey. An Accounting Hero looks like this:

  • Confidence to handle the finance stuff
  • Have a good system
  • Doing your accounting regularly
  • Paperwork organised
  • Managing your money
  • Not dreading tax time
  • Ready to take it to the next level with your accountant

Your Call to Adventure

The path is laid out and the guide is ready. All that’s left is for you to answer the call to adventure.

Are you ready to find your inner accounting wizard and turn that "head trash" into treasure?

There's no need to dive into the deep end. Start with a baby step - Accounting Pre-School - deal with your head trash around money and accounting, gain some confidence, and go from there
